I’ve been blogging for about 8 months now and although it’s not a long period I have learnt a lot in that short space of time. So for any newbies out there, like I was 8 months ago (and still am really), I wanted to let you know what I’ve observed so far…..
It takes an extra 15 minutes to get ready – Us Beauty Bloggers love to take photos of our winged eye liner, new hair style or in my case, my new MAC lipstick. All of these selfies take time, and as the saying goes for every selfie you see, there are another 50 that you don’t. As if my prep time wasn’t long enough I now find myself having to add time on so I can take all these damn selfies. On the plus side, selfies are completely acceptable in the beauty blogging world! 🙂
I need an extra day a week – When I started I never knew how much time blogging would take up. With photographing, writing, proofing and editing photos, it can take hours upon hours for just one post. Not to mention all the social media side of things that goes with blogging. The photos on Instagram, the chats on Twitter and finding inspiration images on Pinterest. Throw in a full time job, the need to visit the gym 3 times a week, family, a busy social life and house duties I just never have enough hours in the day. I wish I could dedicate more time to blogging but I have to remember that I have a life outside of the Internet! To those bloggers who work full time, are Mums, run social groups, knit and post 4 times a week I take my hat off to you!
It’s all about the photography – If I can give one tip it would be “Get shit hot at photography”. Enough said. I’m still learning…..
I’ve become a hoader – There is a small pile of beauty products in the corner of my bedroom I want to photograph, test and blog about. This pile never seems to shrink and in fact is getting bigger. For someone who is a bit of an OCD freak it really does disturb me at times.
I hate not being able to use lipsticks until I’ve photographed them – You know what it’s like, you’ve bought a new pair of shoes and you cant wait to wear them and show them off. Well it’s the same for me with lipstick but until I’ve photographed it for my blog I can’t, as I want it to look perfect in the photos. Sometimes I have had to wait up to 3 weeks to use something and it kills me!
The best Bloggers aren’t necessarily the biggest Bloggers – It’s a sad but true. The biggest Bloggers aren’t necessarily the best Bloggers. As with a lot of things in life its not what you know, but who you know. Get in with the right group of Bloggers, PR’s and agencies and it can mean you’re on the road to stardom. I read some great blogs and see some amazing photography, and some just don’t seem to be as highly regarded as they should be. Before I get any haters moaning, I am not saying that all big Bloggers get famous this way, or that they aren’t great at what they do. I’m simply saying that there is some great talent out there, and those Bloggers aren’t always given the credit they are due.
You suddenly own a lot of nude lipsticks – Only Beauty Bloggers and Makeup Artists will understand this, but you can never own enough nude lipsticks….. and no they don’t all look the same!
No one oustide of the blogging world understands what I do – Or why I do it. But it’s OK, and I’ve accepted that. Because once I’m in my blogging zone, or with my blogging friends it doesn’t bother me and I have all I need.
A large chunk of your pay packet will go to MAC each month – No explanation needed. It’s MAC.
Getting a comment on my blog is so exciting – Because it means that someone actually read my blog and has taken time out of their busy life to say something about it. That’s pretty insane for me to get my head round. So a real, huge thank you to anyone that has done that – it brings a massive smile to my face.
Maybe I’m not as bad as I thought – After all the doubts I have over how terrible my writing skills are (or lack of them I should say), and how crap my photography is, I remember that I have almost reached 10,000 views of my blog, I do have a few followers on social media, and now and again I receive some awesome comments. So, maybe, just maybe I’m not quite as bad as I think.
I could literally go on and on, but I’ve got to stop here. Overall starting my blog has been such a great experience for me and I’m excited about what else I can learn in the future.
Anything else you would add?
